Bulldogs Hear Big Boom

Today, as students were about to make their way to fifth period, a loud “boom” sound was heard from the quad in front of the boys locker room to all corners of Bulldog Country.

A firecracker of some sort was placed in a trash can, amplifying the sound of the explosion. The boys’ locker room video camera captured the incident and one, possibly two students, in the act. So far, the students are not identifiable through the video.

“We don’t know exactly what it was yet. We’re waiting for WCPD to identify it. We think it’s some type of firecracker. This is an isolated incident. Somebody wanted to be funny, but they ended up causing a bigger issue. What that person doesn’t understand is this was harmful to the peace of mind of students and faculty,” said Principal Alex Ruvalcaba.

The deans are in the process of reviewing the video. WCPD will then be contacted once a suspect is identified. WCHS has a zero tolerance policy for incendiary devices. The student responsible may be facing the punishment of suspension or expulsion.

Both WCPD and the administration will be holding an investigation pending the identification of the student(s) responsible. Eyewitnesses have already made reports to the deans.

“That’s the good thing about IMG_0822West Covina High School. A lot of kids here are advocates for doing the right thing, so they’ll come to us and make a report,” Ruvalcaba said.

This incident brings up another school issue to be brought up at future safety committee meetings.

“This is something hard to prevent in terms of searching students. We can’t check everyone as they walk on campus. It’s just not productive,” Ruvalcaba said.

Once security figured out where the explosion happened, they secured the area until students were safely in their classrooms. Afterward, the trash can where the firecracker exploded was moved until WCPD arrived. Teachers were immediately e-mailed a statement to announce to their students and phone blasts were sent out to parents.
